Obverse: Liberty Cap with sun rays; legend 8R Zs 1838 O M 10Ds 20 Gs surrounding.
Reverse: Eagle with snake in beak on Cactus, legend REPUBLICA MEXICANA surrounding
Measures approximately 1 and a 1/2 inches across diameter.
Condition – heavily toned
The “La Meridian Hoard” was a cache of Spanish Colonial, Mexican and American silver coins that were discovered in 1982 during a construction project for the La Meridian Hotel on Canal Street in New Orleans, Louisiana. Two cypress wood boxes of coins were recovered, and appear to have been buried circa 1844.
