Velia was the Roman name for an ancient Greek city founded as Hyele around 538-535 BC. It went through several name changes over the years before finally keeping the name Velia. Like many of tghe Greek cities of Sougthern Italy, Velia became a Roman ally around the year 275 BC.
Obverse design: Head of the goddess Athena wearing a crested Athenian helmet ornamented with a griffin.
Reverse design: A lion facing right devouring prey.
Set in a custom made reversible sterling silver bezel with 14K yellow gold prongs. The bezel including the coin is the size of a U.S. quarter.
