Mexican "Piece of Eight" silver 8 Reales minted 1838 at the Zacatecas mint.

Obverse: Eagle with Serpent in beak, standing on cactus; legend REPUBLICA MEXICANA surrounding.

Reverse: Liberty Cap with rays; legend 8R, Zs, 1838, M, 10Ds,20Gs below

Measures approximately 36 mm in diameter

This coin was recovered from a buried treasure hoard of approximately 2,000 coins found underneath the La Meridian hotel on Canal Street, in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1982. The coins were primarily Spanish, Mexican and American silver coins minted no later than the 1840's.
