Spanish "Piece of Eight" silver 2 Reales minted 1822 at the Guanajuato, Mexico mint.

Obverse: Bust of Ferdinand VII; legend FERD VII DEI GRATIA 1822 surrounding.

Reverse: Crowned coat of arms; legend HISPAN ET IND REX G 2R JM surrounding

Measures approximately 26 mm in diameter

This coin was recovered from a buried treasure hoard of approximately 2,000 coins found underneath the La Meridian hotel on Canal Street, in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1982. The coins were primarily Spanish, Mexican and American silver coins minted no later than the 1840's.
