This Model 1836 U.S. martial flintlock pistol represents the final evolution of the American military flintlock sidearm. Manufactured by Asa Waters of Milbury, Massachusetts and dated 1839 on the lock plate, this pistol is chambered in .54 caliber and fitted with a swivel-mounted steel ramrod, a signature feature of the model.
The left side of the stock bears two crisp military inspector cartouches, “JH” for Joseph Hannis and “WAT” for William A. Thornton — authenticating government acceptance. The pistol’s metal surfaces show fine aged patina, and the wood retains good edges and well-defined markings, attesting to careful preservation.
The action works well as it should, stopping properly at the half cocked (safety) and full cocked (firing) positions.
As the last U.S. martial pistol produced with the flintlock ignition system, the Model 1836 marks the end of an era in American arms making, just before the adoption of percussion ignition. Combining robust construction, graceful design, and rich historical significance, this example remains a fine representation of early 19th-century U.S. military craftsmanship and tradition
