Civil War Burnside Carbine, dated to the 1863–1865 period. This .54 caliber, single- shot percussion carbine was designed by Ambrose E. Burnside before he rose to prominence as a Union general. The rifle is clearly marked on the lock plate “Burnside Rifle C. Providence, R.I.” and the breech is stamped “Burnside patent model of 1864.” Matching serial number 2216 appears on both the breech and the frame.

The Burnside was one of the three carbines that saw the majority of cavalry and mounted service during the war (alongside the Spencer and the Sharps). This example

shows honest battlefield service: the wood forestock and rear stock exhibit significant wear consistent with years of field use, and there are two attachment points for a leather trooper strap — a saddle ring on the frame and a swivel on the rear stock — both present and intact. The original saddle ring remains attached.

Mechanically the action functions correctly and works as it should for a percussion single shot of this era. Metal surfaces retain period patina appropriate to service age; markings remain crisp and legible. Overall, this is an attractive, historically significant Burnside carbine that combines original markings, matching serials, battlefield character, and reliable action — an excellent piece for the Civil War collector or militaria exhibition
