This U.S. Model 1842 single-shot percussion pistol is chambered in .54 caliber with an 81⁄2-inch round barrel and a swivel ramrod beneath. The lock plate is clearly marked “H. Aston & Co. / Middletown, Conn. / 1851,” and the barrel is also dated 1851 at the breech.
The pistol features brass furniture, including the barrel band, trigger guard, and buttplate, all showing the patina expected of a military arm from the mid-19th century. The walnut stock bears distinct military inspector cartouches opposite the lock, including WN for Walter North and WAT for William S. Thornton. Additional inspector initials GW (George Wright) and JH (Joseph Hands) appear on the barrel near the breech.
Produced under government contract, the Model 1842 was the last U.S. Martial pistol manufactured as a single-shot and one of the first to be produced with a percussion ignition system. This example, with its complete swivel ramrod, matching 1851 markings, and visible inspection stamps, represents a fine and well-preserved specimen of an important transition piece in U.S. military small arms history.
The wood is in excellent condition. The frame has been cleaned
