John Smart of London Flintlock Pistol Pair Circa 1720

The maker's name is clearly identified by his strongly struck hallmarks on the bottom of both barrels just ahead of the triggerguards. Respected records date his work to the year 1720.

During the hand assembly process one triggerguard was placed to that it partially obscured the bottom of one hallmark on one pistol but there is no doubt that the marks on both pistols are the same.

A well designed gorgon is in each butt.
Wolf head design in the initial plates on both wood grips. Silver wire inlay in both grips closer to the hammers. Cannon design on muzzles and both bands.

This is an especially old pair that survived in better condition than one would expect. The actions work well. There is no significant damage.

We are quick to point out that only one barrel unscrews. They both did that when the pair was made, but one has become frozen with time
